Oh! Boy – Oh! Girl

Oh! Boy is the second single from Renee Geyer’s 1973 debut self titled album. Oh! Boy had a sex change having originally been written and recorded as Oh Girl. Renee’s first single released in June (Renee happened to be only nineteen) was Space Captain b/w If Only. The follow up single Oh! Boy b/w There’s No Such Thing As Love dropped in September. Both singles failed to chart.

The Chi – Lites (pronounced Shy Lights) released Oh Girl in 1972. It was penned by Eugene Record, who produced the single, sang lead, strummed the guitar and plucked the bass. Harmonica also appeared on the original, blown by band member Marshall Thompson. It was a number one in the US, but could only reach # 58 in Australia.

1975 – L to R: Barry Sullivan (Bass), Greg Tell (Drums/Percussion), Mark Punch (Guitars & Vocals) & Mal Logan (Keyboards) – Renee front & centre.

Renee had been backed by her band Mother Earth on her debut album, however they split at the end of ’73. Mother Earth’s band members were Jim Kelly (Guitar), David Lindsay (Bass), John Proud (Drums) and Mark Punch (Guitar & Vocals).

‘E’ harp

No credit for the harp-man, but I have insider trader information – it was the late great Chris Blanchflower, probably due to his connection to producer Gus McNeil.

  1. Cheers Shep. Typed Renee into YouTube and spent a while listening to her output. A fair few decades and much respected as a singer. The vibe of her songs in the early to mid seventies took me back to Mr. George’s nightclub. Where I spent a fair few nights in my youth. That super strings laden and everything else thrown in disco/soul sound. It has a specific sound of that time. Great blog as always Shep. Brilliant stuff.
