Come In Spinner – Short Snort (Organ) #6

Former S.A. Cricketer With A.I.F.

Ray Robinson, who played interstate cricket for New South Wales and later for South Australia – he was with Prospect club in district games – is with the A.I.F. in Palestine. He did well in cricket games played by an A.I.F. team in a tour of Egypt. Robinson is giving his fellow-diggers many laughs with stories of incidents in his cricket career, which are being published in the A.I.F ‘News’. In a recent issue Robinson tells this story of two former New South Wales players: Wendel Bill and Hughie Chilvers engaged in a mouth organ-step dance duel. Wendel fancies himself as a bit of a step dancer, and Hughie has the same opinion about himself as a mouth organist. In the Melbourne express, on a Victorian tour, O’Reilly, McCabe, Oldfield, Kippax, and Fingleton ‘kidded’ Wendel Bill along that Chilvers could play the mouth organ faster than he could dance. His pride stung, Wendel took up the challenge, and then the fun started. The faster Chilvers played the faster Wendel danced, much to the discomfort of the other passengers in the train it didn’t end there. The duel was renewed the next day and actually went on for several days until eventually it was declared a draw.

Speed ain’t everything you know! You’d think Hugh would know this being a spin bowler.
